Hi Taera,

Allergies short of anaphylaxis are often due to leaky gut.

Fussy eating/refusing healthy foods, such as meat, is also.

Drinking "a lot of smoothies" made with fruits makes me suspect an overgrowth of candida, which would be resolved through GAPS.

People going gluten-free often inadvertantly end up relying on a lot of processed, packaged foods, which sort of defeats the idea of going gluten-free to heal the gut.

The only way one knows if GAPS will help is by giving it a proper and thorough trial.

Yes, a person can use non-dairy kefir, such as coconut kefir.

All my best,
Baden

Hi Kelsey,

With any concerns about safety or wellness, it's important to consult with your doctor.

I can comment only generally on detox baths.

1. You said you experienced these problems in regular baths. Is your bath water hotter than is comfortable?

2. It sounds like you are possibly getting somewhat dehydrated. I would sip an electrolyte drink before, during and after the bath.

3. It is normal for people to experience detox in the way of fatigue, sweats, muscle aches, etc. Personally, I have found that for my body, it works to wait for the discomfort (in my case, increased heart rate, sweating gums, agitation) to develop, then to sit through that until it passes, then to get out, hydrate and rest.

4. It is normal to feel exhausted and possibly ache-y (head, limbs) after a detox bath and to sleep well and deeply.

All my best,
Baden

Hi Taera,

I have not heard of changes to anaphylaxis -on GAPS we would never recommend someone re-try a food they'd previously had a life-threatening reaction to. However, very definitely people have had excess histamine and asthma entirely resolved via GAPS.

Hi Aaron,

GAPS does involve a major lifestyle change and if you are quite comfortable at this point you might not bother, or you might not feel motivated enough to give it the 100% it requires. On the other hand, doing a program like GAPS may well prevent any deepened or further issues.

The only way you will know if the program is helpful to you is by trying it.

With irregular stools, chronic fungal infection not related to constantly wet feet, insomnia and specific vulnerability to stress, I personally would certainly give GAPS a full, proper trial of 3-6 months.

All my best,
Baden

My son had severe eczema since 6 months old. I did the conventional route and nothing help. The doctors just said he would grow out of it and would just give him steriod cream. I could not take it anymore. At age 5 (1.5 years ago) he went on the GAPS diet for 7 months. It was hard. He had major flare ups and hives (which he never had before) but we stuck it out. After 7 months, we slowly went back on a few foods but kept dairy and wheat out. This is the first summer he has gone with out eczema! He skin looks beautiful and he does not have shiners under his eyes. He even can tolerate some dairy and wheat without any flare ups! Not even sunscreen has bothered him.

Thanks to the diet, my son is scab free (except for the pick scrape on his knee from falling off his bike)!!

Hello,
I have a two year old with very severe allergies including an anaphalactic milk allergy. We don't even know what his other allergies are at this point because he seems to react to everything. He gets hives and asthma almost daily at daycare (even though he only eats what I pack him) and he always gets rashes around his mouth. He never eats meat but he does drink a lot of smoothies I make with fresh fruits and veggies and hemp seeds blended together. He only eats gluten free foods, limited eggs.

He wears diapers still but his stools seem well formed, they don't seem hard.

Are the allergies alone signs of a leaky gut? Would this diet help?

I forgot to ask if it is ok to use water kefir as a probiotic since we can’t use any dairy.

Hi! Thanks so much for this post! Last night I took my first detox bath (a vinegar one) and felt awful afterward. I have noticed this before, that when I take baths I get SUPER thirsty, dizzy, anxious, and that's with nothing but hot water. Also I notice when I get out of the tub my legs and ankles feel super stiff, as though there is all of the sudden a huge rush of blood flowing to them that makes it hard to walk. Is this normal? Or could that happen just because of bad circulation? I want to keep taking detox baths but worry about these things a little. (I also got a head ache after the bath last night, just had to go to bed because I was so exhausted. But I slept pretty well!)

I'm wondering if the GAPS diet is something I should attempt. I am in generally good health and don't have much in the way of allergies (just Amoxicillin) so far as I'm aware and I don't have any of the Autism spectrum disorders. I might lean slightly towards Asperger's, but that could just be personality, and I can be fairly social.

My main issues are insomnia, Athlete's foot, and irregular stools. The insomnia has been ongoing most of my life. I know there's a heavy psychological basis, but I don't always eat great, so there could be brain chemistry issues as well. I have trouble sleeping too light and waking too early and sometimes falling asleep. Trouble falling asleep used to be the only issue but my insomnia has changed in the past few years. Athlete's foot is persistent on the toes of my left foot and a little bit on my right. I was able to mostly clear it from my right foot a couple years ago. Stools are generally too soft and require TP although not too uncomfortable. I don't know if that could just be related to unknown diet factors and being easily prone to stress.

I've been on both Accutane and Diflucan at different times during my teenage years.

Thanks for any feedback,
Aaron
